Save Money on Electricity - Appliances
In the last few years the cost of energy keeps rising, and we feel it at the gas stations but also in our electricity bills. As a result you might want to review again the concept of home energy saving.
Buying a home appliance is something we do a lot, from small appliances to big ones, but now besides looking at price, functionality and features, we need to consider also how much it'll cost us to operate it. An appliance might be cheap to buy but the expenses on a daily basis while it works might cost us a lot and by that lose from this purchase, compared to a bit more pricey item but with low energy consumption. Besides the direct effect on your wallet, there is another positive effect on the world we live in.
Finding the right appliance in terms of energy consumption can be difficult. Each appliance is varied by size, features and many other parameters so weighting which one is more efficient might be tricky. One place to start looking is what is known as energy star or energy rating. But what does it mean? The energy rating comes from a program initiated in 1992 by the USA government, where the DOE (Department of Energy) and EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) put a list of items that can have a rating star. Since then, the list of items is growing. The rating is based on evaluation of the energy consumption of the appliance as well as the emissions and the lower the better.
Another benefit, besides the ability to identify which appliance are good in that respect and which are not, manufacturers can get tax credits for making energy efficient appliance and even roll to the customer some of the tax savings. Moving to energy efficient appliances can save you a lot of money (up to $ 100) and cut your monthly electricity bills.
So when you are going to buy a new appliance, check for the energy rating. However, not all goods are eligible for rating. Some of the non eligible are big energy consumers such as dryers or ovens so the instructions for saving in this case, is to check the overall energy consumption of the appliance according to the manufacturer details. You can also ask the sales person for this information.
So next time you go and buy a new appliance, think of your wallet in all aspects (and also think on the environment) and reduce your home energy consumption.
