Favourite Home Appliance - the Kettle

Of all the appliances the vast majority of homes have, the modest kettle would be my favourite. We are updated daily of the uber cool time saving appliances we and our homes deserve. Shops are very good at convincing us that we must have these new appliances, as they will make our lives easier. Of all the appliances available to us I feel the kettle was a genius invention.


Routine is the backbone of most homes. For me, the kettle and routine go hand in hand. From the awakening cup of coffee in the morning to the soothing herbal tea in the evening. The conversations as the water boils, the kettle brings us together. The kettle is easy to use and we get our result (boiling water) quickly. This result means we can make various things - hot drinks, gravy or heat the babies bottle. Kettles are available to most people. They are not a luxury of the rich or a poor persons home appliance. A kettle is not exclusive to any class or race, it is a universal product. Everybody can use it and understand it. Kettles are affordable, fairly easy to replace in the event of breakage and there is variety available.


There is little maintenance involved in kettles. Making sure limescale is removed regularly is recommended. This is a little tedious but will ensure the water you are drinking is of a better quality. The kettle has an element, this heats up in turn heating the water. These elements can burn out and there really is not any way of knowing when this is about to happen. Therefore, you could end up with no kettle and no brew. As annoying as this would be, as previously mentioned, kettles are easily available.


If I had invented the kettle I would have perhaps liked to show the user the condition of the element. This would let you know when the kettle was nearing the end of it's usefulness. I would like to use a visual aide, maybe a small spot below the on/off switch which changes colour in response to wear and tear.
