How to Cook a "Juicy" Turkey
Cooking a juicy turkey is very easy. Obviously you have several choices as ways to cook your turkey. You can cook it in the oven, as has been done for many years. You can smoke your turkey in a smoker. The last method is to deep fry. When deep frying, you can use a propane fryer or you can use an electric turkey fryer.
My mother always cooked in the oven as I was growing up and the turkey usually came out dry. When using the oven method you can cook the stuffing right inside with the turkey at the same time. Usually takes 5 or 6 hours when cooking by this method. You can speed it up with an oven bag but it still takes several hours.
Smoking turkeys is another common way to cook them. This usually takes even longer than the oven but the result is the wood smoked taste that is very popular with some people. Obviously you have to have a smoker larger enough to accommodate a turkey, but you can also smoke many other meats in this if you desire. Smokers come in charcoal or electric. Some people swear by the charcoal method but it can be difficult if you do not have experience cooking with charcoal, as it is not easy to keep the coals hot sometimes. The electric method works well and is easier and you can still put wood chips in to get that smoked taste.
Deep frying your turkey is another option, and this is the way to get a juicy turkey with crispy skin on the outside. The cooking time is greatly reduced with the deep fry method. The most popular method is to use a propane turkey fryer. This heats up the oil very quickly and you can usually cook your turkey in under an hour. We have cooked 14 pound turkeys in 45 minutes before. Be careful with the hot oil and the open flame. Watch YouTube for turkey fryers that have went up in flames due to spilling the oil on the open flame. The other deep fry method is to cook with electric turkey fryers. They offer the same great positive aspects as the gas fryer along with being able to cook in your warm kitchen. Electric turkey fryers are safer than the gas counterparts due to not having the open flame. All you have to do is plug it in to the wall, hit the switch and you are in business. This is the easiest way to cook your turkey and have it come out juicy because when the turkey hits the hot oil and the skin becomes crispy, it locks in all the juices.
